In it Together #TeamThurrock
Thurrock is a unitary borough in south east Essex. It is an area of great contrast and unique opportunities.
It is 70% green belt with 18 miles of riverfront, wildlife areas of natural beauty and many period features including two historic forts. But it’s also a leading centre in ports & logistics (three international ports), retail and creative industries. Located only 30 minutes by train to the City of London, with 18million people within one hour’s drive and six international airports within 60 minutes’ drive, Thurrock’s vision is to be a place to live and stay, work and play. Plus, the M25 runs through the borough, arguably making it the best connected borough by road, sea and air in the country.
Thurrock Council serves the population of 170,000 residents with 67,000 households and 5,000+ businesses and employs approximately 2,700 officers, plus contractors.
The borough comprises a number of diverse communities, with wards at all stages of the socio-economic scales, including four areas which are in the lowest IMD range. The population is ethnically diverse – overall, the borough’s BME residents make up 18% of the population. A quarter of the borough is under 19. The average house price is £266k. However, all of these factors vary a lot between the 20 wards.
The Council’s Director’s Board is made up of 10 people; Chief Executive, three Corporate Directors (Adults, Housing and Health; Children’s Services; Finance, Governance and Property), four Directors (Environment, Highways and Counter-Fraud; HR, OD and Transformation; Strategy, Communications and Customer Services; Place); the Chair of Leadership Group (representing all third tier managers) and the CEX Business Manager.
